Homework

Reading Recovery

Daily homework requires that the student take home 1-2 familiar books to read with an adult. A cut up sentence that they have composed at school is taken home and they are expected to 'put the sentence back together'. They return the books and keep the sentence. Sometimes they will be asked to take home their list of high frequency words to review.

Music

In music, students may be requested to bring in different recyclable materials in order to construct homemade percussion instruments. These are used during class time to teach and reinforce the concept of rhythm and a number of other musical terms. Projects in the older grades are often assigned. Decisions to assign these are made when there is a desire to learn more about classical musicians or even modern artists. These projects are often started during class time with partners and are completed at home on the student's own time. Presentation of these projects is expected, although allowances are made for those students who are uncomfortable doing this. At these times, special permission is given for them to present to the teacher only.
