IB Chemistry
SL Syllabus
Mrs. Hiltz
Room 307
Welcome to your second year as an IB Chemistry student!
This course relies on material learned during the previous year and you should study your old notes, tests, quizzes, and labs that go along with each unit.
The International Baccalaureate Program is a rigorous pre-university course of studies, leading to examinations that meet the needs of highly motivated students.
The IB grade is determined by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). It is based on the IB Exam score (76%) and the Internal Assessment score (24%). The IB 2009 exam schedule is as follows:
|
DATE |
PAPER |
ALLOTTED TIME |
|
To be announced in May |
Chemistry SL – Paper 1

Multiple Choice – 45 min |
|
|
Chemistry SL – Paper 2

The teacher submits an Internal Assessment score to the IBO, and the IBO adjusts it based on lab portfolio evidence. The YCMHS grade is determined by the teacher as outlined in this syllabus.

Evaluation (These percentages may change slightly throughout the year)
16 % Assignments, Homework and Quizzes
30 % Tests
24% Labs
30 % Exam
Assignments are due at the beginning of the class. If you are having difficulty with an assignment, lab report, etc., it is your responsibility to come for extra help before the due date. Late work will not be tolerated and will be penalized by the following marking scale:
Due Date 100%
1st Day deduct 10%
2nd Day deduct 20%
3rd Day receive 0% on assignment
IB Labs will only be marked on the day that they are due. If passed in late, they will not count as an IB lab.
How to succeed in this course:
1) Ask questions in class
2) Always complete assigned homework
3) Review regularly for quizzes and tests
4) Attend extra help several days before assignment deadlines and tests
· No calculators will be used on certain test and exam questions as determined by the IB standards. This includes all multiple choice questions.
* Quizzes will be given periodically, some will be scheduled and others will not. This is intended to encourage you to review class work regularly. Please be prepared!
· EXTRA HELP: Provides an excellent opportunity to receive extra help and to discuss any concerns and/or difficulties you may have with any of the work related to this course.
Bottom Line:
Be prepared to work hard but learn at the same time. Always try to have a positive attitude about the class. Don’t get overwhelmed, manage your workload by not procrastinating! Never be afraid to ask for help from your classmates or your teacher!
One other thing……
You are not your grade. Yes, there may be a lot of pressure on you to do your best academically, but remember your integrity comes first. You are not in a competition! Knowledge is power and more important than points on a test!
