Grade One Home Reading Program

Grade one is the year your child will learn lots of new words and show tremendous growth in their reading ability. Your child will bring home a book at their reading level once a week. Please have them read it to you each night. Return the book the next week on the specified day.

Tips for reading with your child:

  • Repeated readings of a book will improve the way it sounds and learn new words. By time the book is returned, your child should be able to read it with ease.
  • If they get stuck on a word you could suggest they
    • look at the picture for a clue
    • look at the first letter of the word, make the sound and see if something pops in their head
    • ask them to go back and read it again
    • have them read ahead and stop to see if they can figure out the word
    • look for little words or sounds that the know in a word
    • ask them if their guess makes sense
    • as last resort ask them to sound it out

Dolch Words (Grade One Only)

Part of your child's homework will be to practice sight words. Sight words are common words that make up the majority of written text. Some of these words have irregular spelling patterns and just need to be learned. By practicing these words you can help your child become a better reader and writer. Your child should already know some of these words from Primary. At the end of this year your child should know aver 200 words and will be well prepared for Grade Two.

Each week your child will get a list of 10 words to practice. The word lists will be sent home in their Campfire notebook. The words your child knows will be marked with a dot, continue to work on the words that they do not know. Nine out of ten words correct is considered successful and your child will be sent home the next list of 10 words. Each child will be work at their own pace and will continue to practice a list until they have learned the words.

This is primarily a home program. Please take 5-10 minutes a day to practice the list. If you are finding your child knows all the words, practice spelling 5 of them as enrichment. Please contact me if you are concerned with the progress.
