•August 29,1839 Preliminary hearing by Judge Judson aboard the Washington.
•September 19,1839 The defense asked for the release of the three African girls (habeas
corpus),which was denied.It was ruled by Judge Thompson that the United States had no right to try the captives for murder
or piracy.
•September 23,1839 In district court,Judge Judson starts inquiry as to where the Amistad was
captured.
•October 17,1839 Ruiz and Montes arrested in New York City.
