Reverend Jesse Jackson

Growing Up In Greenville
Jesse Jackson was born on Oct. 8, 1941 in Greenville, South Carolina. Jesse’s mother supplemented the family income by running a beauty shop in her house.
Presidential Election
Jesse Jackson was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988. In both campaigns, Jackson focused attention on the problems of African Americans and other minority groups.
Segregation
All his life, Jesse questioned segregation, asking why for example he had to walk 5km to Nicholtown  Elementary when there was a school 2 blocks away.
Jesse’s Efforts
Jackson also led efforts to register more black voters and to increase representation of minority groups at the 1984 and 1988 democratic national convention.He failed to get the presidential nomination

Reverend Jesse Jackson began his activism as a student in the summer of 1960 seeking to desegregate the local public library in Greenville, and then as a  leader in the sit-in movement.

Theological Studies
In 1964 he began his theological  studies at the Chicago theological Seminary ,but deferred his studies when he began working full-time in the Civil  rights Movement .Reverend Jackson received his earned Master of Divinity Degree in 2000.
Becoming an organizer
  In 1965 he became a full-time organizer for the Southern Christian Leadership  Conference  (SCLC). He was soon appointed by Dr. Martin Luther king Jr.to direct SCLC’s Operation Breadbasket program.

Jesse Lead’s the March
Montgomery march on March 20 1965. The marchers were all bedraggled by the 3rd day, but eventually made it to Montgomery.
Starting A Family
Jesse married his college sweetheart Jacqueline Lavinia Brown in 1963 they later had 5 children Santita Jackson ,Congressman Jesse L. Jackson jr. , Jonathan Luther Jackson ,Yusef Dubois Jackson  & Jacqueline Lavinia Brown
