•William Hall was born in Hants Co., N.S., in 1829. His parents were extremely poor; and the boy, showing a  great spirit of independence, shipped before the mast in 1844, sailing
•from Hainesport, the nearest shipping port to his native village. The following six years were spent in the merchant marine of Nova Scotia.
•William hall was the first person to get a Victoria cross  the son of a slave born to slavery after being a slave he attended school  after school he went to the navy in Liverpool England in1852  for 15 years he joined as a Hum he handled heavy guns
