- Robert Nesta /Bob Marley was born on Feb. 6th, 1945 in Sa=
int
Ann’s, Jamaica.
- His mother, Cedalla Booker, was 18 years old and his father, Norval
Sinclair Marley, was 50 years old when he was born.
- Bob spent his early years living with his mother in St. Ann’s,
then he moved to Kingston, the capital of Jamaica when he was a
teenager. They lived in Trench town, a small community within Kingst=
on.
Bob experienced a childhood of violence and poverty. After studying =
at
Stepney school in Kingston, he spent his time acquiring trade as a
welder. He developed a strong passion for music in the church choir
during his youth with encouragement from Desmond Dekker.

- Bob’s religiousness was guided by his mother’s faith in
Christianity. He developed his musical awareness in the church choir.
Bob converted to Rastafarianism by the influences of people close to
him. His wife Rita, was also raised as a Christian but she was expos=
ed
to Rastafarianism by other singers. Bob’s friends, Joxe Higgs =
and
Bunny Livingstone were also Rasta's.

been dating for a year. She too liked to sing. Later she formed the
I-Three, a group of back-up singers in the Wailers. The day after the
wedding they moved to America for a few months to visit his mother. =
They
had 5 children: Sharon, Ziggy, Cedella, Steven, and Damian. They are=

- Bob Marley recorded his first track in Beverly Studios where his name
was accidentally released as “Bob Morley”.
- Shortly after recording in Beverly Studios, Bob formed his own band,
“The Wailing Wailers” in 1962. They named it this becaus=
e in
those times, people were always crying (wailing).
- Members of the band were, Bunny Livingstone, Peter McIntosh, Junior
Brathwaite as lead singer and Beverly Kelso and Cherry Smith as back=
up
singers.
- Late 1963, they released their first single, “Simmer Down̶=
1;.
The song expressed the conflict going on in the ghetto between the
Rasta’s and the authorities. The song meant to “calm
down”.
- In 1966, Bob left with his wife to Wilmington, Delaware to take a br=
eak
from the conflict between his band and crooked record studios. Bob s=
pent
some time working at a Chrysler car assembly line, but later lost his
job. He applied for welfare but was turned down. Then he was drafted=
in
to the U.S. army to fight in Vietnam, pushing Bob to go back to Jama=
ica
to continue his music career there.

- After returning to Trench Town, he gathered up some of his friends to
rebuild the Wailing Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingstone in
1967. Jamaican music evolved from ska to rock steady. Ska was a genr=
e of
music invented in Jamaica that wasn’t really rocksteady or reg=
gae
but a medley of Caribbean mento, calypso, and American Jazz.
- They attempted to make their own record label called Wail ’N S=
oul
but it didn’t last very long due to issues of Bunny Livingstone
and Bob being put into jail for possession of drugs. While in prison,
Bob spent time reflecting on his life, which sprouted new ideas for =
some
of his best music.
- The group quickly joined with Lee “Scratch” Perry. Lee
pushed Bob to work his songs to the full potential. Their music soon
transformed into “rebel music”. They were known as
“soul rebels”. The group The Upsetters joined their band=
and
added the feeling and expression into their music.
- In 1970, they made a new record label called “Tuff Gong”.
They became popular and joined with Johnny Nash, and American singer,
and they worked together to build “Reggae on Broadway” u=
ntil
the project failed and the band was split up once again.
- In Jamaica, 1972, Chris Blackwell gave them another chance because w=
hen
he was a little boy a group of Rasta’s saved him from a boating
accident so he felt he owed this Rasta band a chance. Through this, =
they
finally received the publicity they deserved. Many inspirational son=
gs
were written.
