  • In Scotland they say Merry Christmas just like us unless they are speaking Scottish Gaelic. In Scottish Gaelic they say Merry Christmas  like this.
  • Merry Christmas in Scottish Gaelic: Nollaig Chridheildhuibh. Sadly I don’t  know how to say it.

  • They decorate their houses with evergreens such as holly, mistletoe, rowan (a European ash with a red berry inside) and juniper representing life and hope.

  • Santa is also called Santa in Scotland. What a  coincidence that it’s the same name. Santa in Scotland wears a kilt and dresses in red but does not have a pointy hat. His hat is more like a bakers but its red and has buckled shoes.

  •  The Scottish Bannocks are a traditional Christmas meal in Scotland.

    2 cups oatmeal
    1 cup flour
    1 teaspoon salt
    3/4 cup butter or margarine
    1/2 cup boiling water


    1. Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl. 2. Cut into butter with knife until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. 3. Add the water to the mixture. 4. Mix to a dough. 5. Roll out until quite thin and then cut into rounds (about the size of a jam lid). 6. Cook at 200 degrees celcius for 10 minutes.
