- large animal hides, to keep in the heat in summer, the rain, snow and cold out, keep flies out, for privacy, to help keep out preditors

They would be able to boil water in their log kettle by placing in it rocks heated by leaving them in the red-hot embers of the fire. Wooden tongs were used to lift the hot stone from the fire to the kettle. Once the water was boiling the food would be put in it to cook.

- the head of the family would occupy the place away from the drafts around the door. The Elder would sit in the place of honour in the back. The women would sit on one side and the men on the other in order of age with the younger toward the door.

- by observing and by being instructed by the older members of the family
