Ground Preparation: Remove the top layer of grass, weeds, etc. Dig a hole three times larger than the diameter of the plant to be planted. This will allow the roots to easily spread out. It the soil is poor it can be amended with good loam, peat moss, compost, fertilizer, etc.
When the tree is placed in the hole it should be at the level it was in the pot. However, in some nurseries extra soil might be added, check to see the the root flare is not buried in the pot. If it is then expose it at the time of planting. Fill the hole in around the tree and compress the soil to remove air pockets, and water (this step can be combined).
A happy addition to our garden. A proud group of students. May 7, 2004
Unfortunately this tree and another was stolen during the summer.
