- He went to public school until at age 15
Elijah traveled to Edinburg Scotland for an apprenticeship and
for study. After years of study he was certified in Scotland as a
mechanical engineer. Even though in Michigan McCoy could only find work
as a fireman and oiler at the Michigan Central Railroad.

- He was born into a family of 14 his mother and father: George and
Mildred Goins McCoy. He also had 11 siblings. Later in life he had his
own family. His first wife was Ann Elizabeth Stewart who he married in
1868 sadly she died in 1872. His
second wife was Mary Eleanor Delany.

- Elijah invented an automatic lubricator
for oiling the steam engines of locomotives and ships. In his
life he got 57 patens.

- Elijah died on October 10th 1929 due to senile dementia. He
spent his last year in the Eloise infirmary in Michigan (poorhouse).

- I feel Elijah McCoy is very important because he made it easier for
railroad workers to oil trains and he helped ship workers to oil their
ships. He helped even the people of today by inventing the folding
ironing board and the lawn sprinkler.
