Josiah was born on June 15th ,1789 in
Charles county, Maryland. Josiah Henson was a fugitive slave, Methodist
preacher, author, and founder of the settlement at Dawn Canada. |

In 1830 he almost got separated from his
family. He was going to be sold to
a slave owner. |

before he was eighteen. |

Josiah Henson saved up this money to get out of
his slavery and when he took his money the price to buy his freedom had
increased to 1000 dollars. He had three hundred and fifty dollars saved
to buy his freedom. |

Josiah had a wife and four children. His oldest son was named Tom. Josiah had two wives, his first wife's
name was Charlotte, a slave, she died around October 1852 and had at least
12 children; only eight of the children survived. |

His second wife’s name was Mrs. Nancy Gamble, a
free black widow, they had four children. |
|
|

It is 212 pages long and all about his life as a
slave and getting to freedom in Canada. |

When Josiah Henson first reached Canada’s shore,
he threw himself on the sand, rolled in the sand, and danced around. |

He spent thirty years in a plantation in
Montgomery county, Maryland before he escaping to become a Methodist
preacher, abolitionist, lecturer, and a founder of a cooperative colony of
slaves in Canada. |

Josiah Henson was given the Christian name of
his first master Dr. Josiah McPherson, and the surname of his masters
uncle. Josiah was five when
McPherson died. At the age of eighteen
Josiah Henson became a Christian, during his three years in Kentucky. He became a preacher to make money to
buy his freedom. Josiah sailed
though Indiana and Ohio to buffalo
when crossing the Niagara
river they finally reached
upper Canada on October 28th 1830 . |
