Portia White
n Portia White was born=
on
June 24th, 1911. In 1997 Portia
White sings solo in church at the age of six. In 1919 Her Father, Reverend White returned from Worl=
d War 1 , The family moved to Halifax N.S. in 1935,1937,1938, Portia wins the Kennedy Silver Cup=
. Portia White sang whenever and , Wherever She Coul=
d In Halifax. In1939 The Halifax Ladies Musical Club=
awards Portia White a Scholarship.In1941 Portia Wh=
ite gives her first concert in Toronto with Help From =
Edith Reid and The Branksome haul , Portia sings an arti=
st Contract at town hall in New York City In March of=
1941 and resigns as a school teacher.

Indies, Latin and South America. In 1952 after lea=
ving the full time concert stage she teaches voice in
Toronto. In 1955 Portia ha=
s an
operation for cancer. 1964 Portia sings
for Queen Elizabeth & Prince Phillip and in1968 On February 13th Port=
ia dies
at age 57 in Toronto.

Portia White
nPortia White had a family of 11, Portia was the 3<=

eleven children. Her fat=

Baptist minister, became the first black graduate of Acadia University in 1906. The same ye=

married Portia’s mo=
ther.
In 1994 Edith Read arranged an audition with Edward Johnson, the Canadian-born general manager =
of the
Metropolitan Opera. In March, =
Portia
White had her debut concer=
t at
the New York Town Hall before a packed audience. A second Town Hall concert was held in October, and =
the
New York headline read=
A
great Star is Born. Portia White was praised
for her voice, musicianship, diction, and gracious stage presence. Portia White's repertoire was a mixture =
of
European classics, which s=
he
sang very well, and Negro spirituals with which most critics and audiences felt she really
excelled.
