Plant and Animal Dependence
Pollinators
This special group of animals includes bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, flies,
wasps, and bats. Pollinators look for nectar in flowers. As they fly from flower
to flower, they accidentally carry pollen from the male to the female parts of
the plants. This allows the plants to make seeds and fruit. About 80% of
flowering plants depend on pollinators for this job. Foods like apples, carrots
and peaches could not grow without them. Poisons that people use to kill pests
and weeds also kill these animals.
Vermicompost
Red wriggler worms in a compost bin will eat the rotting rotting food and make
castings which are full of nutrients for plants.
