Mi'kmaq Project 6R

Choose from the suggestions on this page or come up with your own. It must be approved by your teacher and parent/guardian.
The projects are divided into groups to match the programs they appeared in on the video.
Each project must be accompanied with a write up detailing: what it is, how the Mi'kmaq used it, how the Mi'kmaq made it, how you made it (giving how you were helped and what you did on your own),  and research resources used.
Program One
a) With scraps of leather, "leather-look" cloth or even paper, try making a miniature set of Mi'kmaq clothing for a man and/or a woman. You may even make full scale clothing.
b) Try modelling one of the following: a wigwam, a cooking kettle with a model fire and heating stones with the sticks to carry them, a stone knife with a wooden handle, an ocean-going canoe with/without a paddle.
Program Two
c) Make a model leister.
d) Using research resources, try painting some
Mi'kmaq designs on your own, preferably using twigs or small bone slivers as brushes.
e) Prepare a poster or booklet illustrating and listing local sea-birds whose eggs might have provided part of the family meal.
Program Three
f) Make a model smoke rack for fish.
g) Make a deadfall trap for bears.
h) Try reproducing one of the tools or weapons you have seen to date. It should be particularly interesting to try to fashion something from bone or stone. What difficulties did you encounter?
Program Four
i) Construct an eel weir
j) Research the life cycle of the eel; find out when and how the
Mi'kmaq customarily fished for them. Prepare a poster or a booklet with illustrations and information.
k) Research medical treatments and medicines used by the
Mi'kmaq. Prepare some samples or poster of these with a write up.
Program Five
l) Prepare a model of one of the following: sled, snow-shoes, winter wigwam, stretching rack for hides, sweat lodge.
m) Prepare a poster/report on the items we use now in winter recreation which were first used by the
Mi'kmaq.
